If an analogue clock has two hands, then there is a: In some analogue clocks, hours are marked with Roman numerals (such as I, II, III, IV, etc.), while in others, there are no numbers marked in the clock.Īs discussed above, analogue clocks commonly have two or three hands. Here, we will discuss analogue clocks in detail.Ī clock is known as an analogue clock when it has moving hands and is usually (hours) marked from 1 to 12 to show you the time of the day. On the other hand, a digital clock is a clock that simply uses numbers to represent time. An analogue clock is a clock that shows time with two or three moving hands that move in a circular motion. Both the clocks have different ways to represent time. The two clocks that are widely used are analogue clock and digital clock. Also, some clocks have a stopwatch and some have alarms. Some clocks show only time, whereas others show temperature, date, weather, etc. Let’s first know what a clock is before going into the analogue clock.Ī clock is a device that measures and represents time. There are basically two types of clocks - analogue and digital. Some might have numbers written on them, some might have hour, minute and second hands on them. Students are then given the task to drag the correct clock to the given story.I am sure you might have seen different types of clocks. Then comes the clock that reads 3 o'clock, followed by 4, 6, and 7 o'clock. For example,: On the left side is the clock that reads 1 o'clock. Then ask students to drag the clocks into correct order, starting at the given time. Use the following questions to check that students understand how to tell time. Show that as the big hand completes a rotation, the small hand moves forward. Show students the clock with both hands pointing at 12. Tell students that it is now one o' clock. Show the clock face with the minute hand on 12 and the hour hand on 1. If the big hand is on the 12 it is a whole hour. The big hand tells us how many minutes have passed and the little hand tells us how many hours. There are two hands on a clock: the big, or minute hand and the little, or hour hand. Then explain how the hands on the clock work. Check that students understand where the numbers belong by having them drag the numbers to where they belong on the clock. Explain that the 12 is always at the top of the analog clock. Start by discussing the importance of being able to tell time in whole hours on the analog clock.

MPB is so close to Savannah Airport, and a super easy drive up to Charleston for a day or two on either end of your trip. I always think it's weird when people comment on employees at a hotel because it seems pretentious, but I would be remiss not to mention Richard (valet), Zulfira (front desk), and Firoze (rooms) who are all three so devoted and passionate about the property, it's contagious! They do not miss an opportunity to make guests feel welcome and spoiled. All dining options are outstanding, and housekeeping is impeccable (and I am very hard to please on that one.) The pool area is beautiful and has a great vibe, and our favorite on-property is electric bikes for miles and miles of safe and beautiful trails in and out of the residential area and golf course. The rooms are beautifully decorated and have every possible thoughtful detail and convenience, and we especially love the larger bathroom size. We loved it so much we came back two summers in a row! They, like the gigantic predinosaur griffinflies, lack the ability to fold their wings up against their bodies in the way modern insects do, although some evolved their own different way to do so. Modern dragonflies do retain some traits of their distant predecessors, and are in a group known as the Palaeoptera, ancient-winged. While both of those groups are sometimes referred to as "giant dragonflies", in fact true dragonflies/odonata are more modern insects that had not evolved yet.įurther information on the extinct genus of dragonfly: Libellulium The Protanisoptera, another ancestral group that lacks certain wing-vein characters found in modern Odonata, lived from the Early to Late Permian age until the end Permian event, and are known from fossil wings from current-day United States, Russia, and Australia, suggesting they might have been cosmopolitan in distribution. Known informally as "griffinflies", their fossil record ends with the Permian–Triassic extinction event (about 247 Mya). Museum of Toulouse Mesurupetala, Late Jurassic ( Tithonian), Solnhofen limestone, Germany Dragonflies in Oze National Parkĭragonflies and their relatives are similar in structure to an ancient group, the Meganisoptera, from the 325 Mya Upper Carboniferous of Europe, a group that included the largest insect that ever lived, Meganeuropsis permiana from the Early Permian, with a wingspan around 750 mm (30 in). Evolution The giant Upper Carboniferous dragonfly relative, Meganeura monyi, attained a wingspan around 680 mm (27 in). The infraorder Anisoptera comes from Greek ἄνισος anisos "unequal" and πτερόν pteron "wing" because dragonflies' hindwings are broader than their forewings. Their bright colours and agile flight are admired in the poetry of Lord Tennyson and the prose of H. They are symbols of courage, strength, and happiness in Japan, but seen as sinister in European folklore. They are used in traditional medicine in Japan and China, and caught for food in Indonesia. During mating, the male grasps the female at the back of the head, and the female curls her abdomen under her body to pick up sperm from the male's secondary genitalia at the front of his abdomen, forming the "heart" or "wheel" posture.įossils of very large dragonfly-like insects, sometimes called griffinflies, are found from 325 million years ago (Mya) in Upper Carboniferous rocks these had wingspans up to about 750 mm (30 in), though they were only distant relatives, not true dragonflies.ĭragonflies are represented in human culture on artefacts such as pottery, rock paintings, statues, and Art Nouveau jewellery. They have a uniquely complex mode of reproduction involving indirect insemination, delayed fertilization, and sperm competition. They are fast, agile fliers capable of highly accurate aerial ambush, sometimes migrating across oceans, and often live near water. In some species, the nymphal stage lasts up to five years, and the adult stage may be as long as 10 weeks, but most species have an adult lifespan in the order of five weeks or less, and some survive for only a few days. Dragonflies are agile fliers, while damselflies have a weaker, fluttery flight.ĭragonflies are predatory insects, both in their aquatic nymphal stage (also known as "naiads") and as adults. An adult dragonfly's compound eyes have nearly 24,000 ommatidia each.ĭragonflies can be mistaken for the closely related damselflies, which make up the other odonatan infraorder ( Zygoptera) and are similar in body plan, though usually lighter in build however, the wings of most dragonflies are held flat and away from the body, while damselflies hold their wings folded at rest, along or above the abdomen. Many dragonflies have brilliant iridescent or metallic colours produced by structural colouration, making them conspicuous in flight. Adult dragonflies are characterized by a pair of large, multifaceted, compound eyes, two pairs of strong, transparent wings, sometimes with coloured patches, and an elongated body. Loss of wetland habitat threatens dragonfly populations around the world. Most are tropical, with fewer species in temperate regions. About 3,000 extant species of true dragonflies are known. A dragonfly is a flying insect belonging to the infraorder Anisoptera below the order Odonata. Ensure that you serve a small amount of mashed potatoes only. Brunch will never be the same.Enjoy these crispy and fluffy biscuits with shrimp and grits. To serve, pile the grits into wide bowls, you know, for maximum coverage! Top with a generous portion of that delicious gravy and a few pieces of shrimp. Remove from heat and add shrimp back to the gravy to reheat. Season with 1/2 tbsp of cajun seasoning, 1 tsp of paprika and onion powder, and salt and pepper to taste. Lower the heat to medium-low and allow the gravy to thicken, 2-3 minutes. Stir to coat and cook for about 1-2 minutes to cook the raw flour taste out.Ĭarefully pour in 1 1/2 cups of chicken stock and 1/2 cup of milk into the pan and whisk/stir until the flour has dissolved. Cook until translucent, then sprinkle 1/4 cup of flour over the pan. Now, add in 1/2 cup of diced white onion, 1/3 cup each of diced red and green bell peppers, and 1 clove of minced garlic. Drain some of the fat if needed, leaving at least 2-3 tbsp in the pan. Saute for 3-5 minutes until the fat renders out of the bacon and it begins to crisp. In the same pan you cooked the shrimp in, add 4 pieces of chopped bacon and 2 links (about 6 oz) of diced andouille sausage. In a large skillet with 1 tbsp of olive oil and butter, sear the shrimp, 2 minutes on the first side and 1 minute on the second. I seasoned 1lb of 26/30 shrimp (jumbo- 26-30 per pound) with 2 tsp of cajun seasoning, 1/2 tsp of onion powder and smoked paprika, and salt and pepper. And the best part is, it comes together while you are cooking your grits. But the best part of this dish is the shrimp in andouille gravy. Yes, these grits are AWESOME! Yes, I could eat them alone. Remove from the heat and immediately whisk in 2 tbsp of unsalted butter, 4 tbsp of heavy cream, and 1 1/2 cups of shredded sharp cheddar cheese into the pot, seasoning with salt and pepper to taste. Lower the heat and let the grits continue cooking for another 5-7 minutes or until all of the liquid is absorbed and the grits are thick, whisking occasionally. A serving is 1/4 cup of grits, so to make this recipe for one, use 1/4 cup of grits to 1 cup of liquid.īring the liquid to a boil and slowly pour in your grits, whisking vigorously to avoid clumping. The ratio of grits to liquid should be 1:4, for every 1 cup of grits, you will need 4 cups of liquid. Now add 3 cups of chicken stock and 1 cup of milk (you can use all chicken stock but I like a bit of creaminess). I cook until just translucent and aromatic. Start by sauteing 1/3 cup of diced white onion and a minced garlic clove in the bottom of a saucepot with a drizzle of olive oil. I like to start mine with a little flavor base. To me, they always come out bland and lifeless, no matter how much you doctor them up! One is constant whisking, and the other is plenty of fat! For this recipe I used quick grits. But with this recipe, I will never doubt the greatness of grits again! And like many, I am positive that the reason for this was because I never had them prepared well. Now, I will confess, I was not always a fan of grits (shrimp have always been my main squeeze!). Are you really from the South if you don’t enjoy a hearty bowl of shrimp and grits? I have had a lot in my day, and I have to say these cheesy pepper grits topped with a cajun andouille sausage and bacon gravy may in fact be my favorite version of them….ever! Yes that is a tall feat, but the spicy, salty gravy luxuriously coats the shrimp and adds such a great contrast to the rich creamy grits.
